GGMA Morning Wrap 18-05-2026
Global risk traded heavy from the open as a synchronised bond rout extended on stalled Iran negotiations and Brent +2% to ~$111, with Trump's 'clock is ticking' warning to Tehran and a drone-strike fire at the UAE Barakah nuclear plant. Japan was the epicentre of the curve sell-off — 40y JGB at a record 4.21%, 10y at 1996 highs and 30y at 1999 debut highs after Takaichi finalised a $117bn extra budget funded mostly by new debt. The Nikkei (-1.7%) led the Asia risk-off, ASX (-1.2%) and HSI (-0.9%) followed. European futures opened soft (Euro Stoxx 50 -0.9%, DAX -0.8%) and US futures point lower (Dow -0.8%, S&P 500 -0.5%, Nasdaq -0.5%, Russell -0.5%) after the US 30y UST hit its highest since 2023 and Gundlach said cuts are 'just not possible', echoed by Yardeni's warning that 2026 cuts are 'essentially off the table' and the Fed must drop its easing bias at the June FOMC to retain control of rates — traders now see a Fed hike as a lock by March. The UK overlay added to the bond-market stress as 30y gilts pushed to 5.86% last Friday (post-1998 high) and GBP weakened to 1.3371 on the Burnham/Streeting leadership-challenge headlines and Streeting's EU-rejoin signal.
China's April activity decline — Retail Sales +0.2% YoY (vs +2.0% cons, weakest since Dec-2022), IP +4.1% (vs +6.0% cons), FAI ex-rural YTD -1.6% (vs +1.7% cons) and Property Investment YTD -13.7% — kept Shanghai softer and was offset narratively by the Trump-Xi-summit deliverable that China will buy ≥$17bn US farm goods annually, lifting Chicago grains.
Commodities split: WTI (+2.1%), broad Energy (+1.6%), Grains (+2.3%) and Agriculture (+1.6%) all firm, while Copper (-0.9%), Industrial Metals (-0.4%) and Precious (-0.6%) declined. Goldman reaffirmed $5,400/oz gold year-end on EM-CB buying.
Crypto was the soft spot inside the risk-off (ETH -3.1%, BTC -1.7%) as the cross-asset correlations tightened.
What to watch: G7 Finance Ministers + CB Governors begin in Paris with the bond selloff explicitly on the agenda; China data, Switzerland Q1 GDP flash 09:00 and NAHB Housing Index 16:00 are the day's data anchors; Mann (BoE) and Elderson/Kocher (ECB) speak.
